About Me

I love being a teacher and have been teaching in some capacity ever since my freshman year of college nineteen years ago.  More officially, this is my twelfth year as a licensed teacher, and I've taught everything from pre-K through 8th grade.  This is now my sixth year teaching ELD, five of them with GVA.  I taught at GVA-Northglenn for three years and then moved down here to Parker and began teaching at GVA-DC.  The GVA model is amazing, and being a teacher here is likewise a wonderful experience.  One of the most common questions I am asked when people find out where I work is: "what languages do you speak?"  Unfortunately, English is my only fluent language - I only wish I could be a kindergartner in Fang Laoshi's class and learn mandarin!  Fortunately, as an ELD teacher, I have learned far more about how my own language works than I ever knew before!

I am also a parent.  My wife and I have two kids we adopted from China.  One of them is a first grader here at GVA-DC.  She has long surpassed me in her Mandarin language ability and now gives me "tests" while we're driving in the car.  As my son is only four, I think I may know how to say about as many words in Mandarin as him... there's hope for me, yet!.
