Use Your Cell Phone’s Mobile Hotspot for Internet Connectivity for your Student’s Chromebook*
Android (Some setting locations may slightly differ)
- Go into Settings.
- Click on CONNECTIONS (or similar).
- Turn off Wi-Fi by touching the on/off soft switch
- Scroll down in the current screen, you are in, on your phone to the Mobile Hotspot and Tethering section and press the heading with your finger (or Touch the More item in the Wireless & Networks section, and then choose Tethering & Portable Hotspot) to go into the hotspot settings.
- Note the hotspot a name (usually the name of your cell phone) and the Hotspot password.
- Turn on the Hotspot by touching the on/off soft switch next to Mobile Hotspot (or similar)
- Recommendation: Plug the phone into a power source. (The mobile hotspot feature can draw a lot of power.)
- To connect the Chromebook to the Hotspot, click on the wireless bars icon in the lower right of the Chromebook screen.
- Under the wireless icon in the pop-up window, click on the down arrow and select the name of your cell phone’s Hotspot and enter the password. You should now be connected to the internet through your cell phone’s hotspot.
iPhone (Some setting locations may slightly differ)
- Go into Settings.
- Press Personal Hotspot.
- Press on the “Allow Others to Join” on/off soft switch to turn on the Hotspot.
- Note the Wi-Fi Password.
- Note the name of your iPhone under the “TO CONNECT USING Wi-Fi” section.
- Close the Settings app on your iPhone.
Recommendation: Plug the phone into a power source. (The mobile hotspot feature can draw a lot of power.) - To connect the Chromebook to the Hotspot, click on the wireless bars icon in the lower right of the Chromebook screen.
- Under the wireless icon in the pop-up window, click on the down arrow and select the name of your cell phone’s Hotspot and enter the password. You should now be connected to the internet through your cell phone’s hotspot.
Please contact your cell phone company to verify that the mobile hotspot is included in your cellular plan so that you do not incur unexpected charges.
