From the Principal

We had a fun-filled week celebrating our parent’s right to choose the best-fit school for their children.

The culminating events of National School Choice week were International Day Cambodia and the StarTalk Kick-off event, both of which celebrated the Mandarin Chinese language. Thank you to all students, staff, and volunteers who worked hard to make these events successful!

Jeans for Dreams

This Friday, February 3rd, is the first day of our annual “Jeans for Dreams” fundraiser to benefit New Dimension of Hope, our sister school in Liberia. This year, we are raising money to build a classroom to house another grade level of students!

  • Students and staff can pay $1 to wear jeans each Friday in February.
  • Students should wear uniform/spirit shirts on Friday with their jeans!
  • Money will be turned in to AM teachers.
  • The class that has the highest % of dollars per student raised will receive a Chick-Fil-A party!

During the afternoon announcements on Fridays, we will report on our school-wide progress toward our goal of raising $2,000!

Students have been discouraged from asking their parents for money to donate to “Jeans for Dreams.” Rather, we encourage students to brainstorm ways to earn money doing additional chores around the house.

To learn more about New Dimension of Hope, please watch the Netflix documentary profiling Ebeneezer Norman, founder of NDH.

Mr. Norman attributes much of his school's success to the support of Global Village Academy- Douglas County and their fundraising efforts.

  • Over the past four years, GVA-DC has donated more than $8,500 to NDH to sponsor the construction of classrooms, pay teacher salaries, and construct a playground for students.
  • All money was raised through our “Jeans for Dreams” fundraiser.

World Read Aloud Day- February 1st

For 14 years, World Read Aloud Day has called attention to the importance of sharing stories by challenging participants to grab a book, find an audience, and read aloud! The global effort, created by the non-profit LitWorld and sponsored by Scholastic, is celebrated annually in over 173 countries and brings people together through the shared connection of reading aloud in all our communities.

This year, Scholastic is hosting a worldwide WRAD-a-thon on the free Storyvoice app.

  • Log in on February 1st  for a series of live interactive read-aloud shows with top World Read Aloud Day authors, such as Rebecca Elliott, Mac Barnett, and Kat Fajardo.
  • Authors and reading advocates from as far away as Australia, India, and Africa will read, draw, and interact with classrooms and families around the globe, including the award-winning Brian Selznick, who will be sharing a sneak peek at his upcoming release Big Tree.
  • Can’t make a live show? You’ll still be able to access special content available on demand when you log on to Storyvoice through February 6th, including an exclusive surprise from the author of Cat Kid Comic Club — Dav Pilkey.
  • See the attached schedule for more information!
