AP Corner: Attendance Matters!
Did you know that frequent absences, even in the early years, can impact a child’s success long-term? Here are a few facts:
- Missing just 10% of the school year—around two days a month—can make it harder for children to keep up with their peers.
- Tardiness and frequent absences, even when spread out, can add up and impact a student’s learning.
- Regular attendance not only helps students academically but also builds their connection to school and their confidence.
It’s important to build good attendance habits early. Consistent daily attendance is critical for success at all grade levels. According to the Colorado School Attendance Act, children between the ages of 6 and 17 must attend school unless excused. Here are some key terms to keep in mind:
- Truancy: An unexcused absence.
- Habitually Truant: Four unexcused absences in one month or ten in a school year.
- Chronically Absent: Missing 10% or more of enrolled school days, excused or unexcused.
How You Can Help Build Strong Attendance Habits
- Set a regular bedtime and morning routine.
- Lay out clothes and pack backpacks the night before.
- Keep your child healthy and up-to-date on vaccinations.
- Schedule non-urgent medical appointments outside of school hours.
- If your child is anxious about attending school, ask their teacher or counselor for advice.
