Did You Know?
- Missing just 2 days a month adds up and makes it harder for children to keep up with schoolwork.
- Even one or two days missed every few weeks can affect learning.
- Tardiness and absences affect not only your child but also the whole class, as teachers may need to pause to help students catch up.
Key Terms:
- Truancy: An unexcused absence.
- Habitually Truant: 4 unexcused absences in one month or 10 in one year.
- Chronically Absent: Missing 10%+ of school days (excused or unexcused, including suspensions).
Why Attendance Matters at Every Stage:
- Preschool & Elementary: Builds strong learning habits and supports reading success.
- Middle School: Prevents disengagement and keeps students on track.
- High School: By 9th grade, attendance is one of the strongest predictors of graduating on time.
What Families Can Do:
- Set consistent bedtimes and morning routines.
- Prepare clothes and backpacks the night before.
- Keep your child healthy and up to date on vaccinations.
- Schedule trips and appointments outside of school hours.
- Have a backup plan for transportation.
- Talk with teachers or counselors if your child feels anxious about attending.
GVA-DC Perfect Attendance Recognition
September is Attendance Awareness Month! From Aug. 13–31, 181 students earned Perfect Attendance (no absences, tardies, or early leaves). Each student will receive a gift certificate.
Moving forward, we will recognize monthly perfect attendance winners and reward families with special incentive gifts. Together, let’s build great attendance habits that support learning and future success!
Our board has reviewed and approved our revised 25-26 GVADC Attendance Policy.
Please take a moment to review it so you are familiar with the expectations.
We appreciate your support in helping your child attend school every day, on time, and ready to learn. Please don’t hesitate to reach out if you have questions or need assistance.
