From the Principal

We had a fun-filled week celebrating our parent’s right to choose the best fit school for their children.

The culminating event of National School Choice Week was a visit from Ebenezer Norman, founder of New Dimension of Hope (NDH). Mr. Norman shared the rough-cut of his Netflix documentary profiling his work to build a school in Liberia. Students were very excited to see many current and former GVA-DC students in the film and learn that the school in Liberia has a classroom named “Global Village Academy”. In addition, Mr. Norman participated in a Zoom interview with several classes before stopping by rooms to thank students for supporting his school.

Mr. Norman attributes much of the success of his new school to the support of Global Village Academy- Douglas County and their fundraising efforts. Over the past two years, GVA-DC has donated more than $3,000 to NDH to sponsor the construction of a classroom and to pay teacher salaries. All money was raised through our “Jeans for Dreams” fundraiser.

This Friday, February 5th, is the first day of our 2021 “Jeans for Dreams” fundraiser to benefit New Dimension of Hope. This year, we are raising money to build a playground at our sister school in Liberia! Students and staff can pay $1 to wear jeans each Friday in the month of February. Students should wear uniform/spirit shirts on Friday with their jeans! The money will be turned in to AM teachers. During afternoon announcements on Fridays, we will report out about our progress to our goal of raising $1,000!!

Students have been discouraged from asking their parents for money to donate to “Jeans for Dreams”. Rather, we encourage students to brainstorm ways in which they can earn money doing additional chores around the house.

Thank you for supporting our fundraising efforts to benefit our sister school in Liberia, and for helping us to teach our kids about the importance of helping those less fortunate.

I hope you have an amazing week!!

Warmly,

Stacy Bush
