From the Principal

Dear Dragon Families,

As you may be aware, in a Special Meeting held on Friday, the Douglas County Board of Health (DCBH) passed a Public Health Order (PHO) for Douglas County voiding all prior health orders including the August 31st PHO regarding the masking of children ages 2-18 while at school.

While this seems straightforward (masks are no longer required), there is contradictory language within the health order regarding exemptions for non-mask wearers and enforcement of the PHO that is supposed to be clarified at a DCBH meeting this Tuesday.

On Saturday evening, Douglas County School District sent information to its families regarding their response to the new PHO which includes a requirement for families not choosing to not wear a mask to file an exemption.   This communication has caused much confusion in the DCSD community.

On Wednesday, October 13th at 6:30 pm the Global Village Academy Board of Directors will review the new PHO (post-revisions), DCSD’s response to the PHO, review school-based data including cases of COVID at school, and parent survey feedback to inform potential revisions to our masking policy.

Until then, we will continue to stay the course and ask that all students, parents, and staff wear masks while at school.

Mask Usage and Beginning of the Year Parent Survey
If you have not already done so, please complete the Beginning of the Year Parent survey. Be sure to only fill out one survey per household, so we can keep our data collection consistent.

Uniform Reminders
We are seeing more and more students arriving at school wearing clothing that is not approved uniform attire. When students are out of uniform, they are referred to the Health Clinic to borrow uniform clothing and a note is sent home to parents. Repeated offenses will result in phone calls to parents from members of the administrative team. Following is our Dress Code Policy as noted in our Parent and Student Handbook.

Approved uniform attire
  • GVA-DC logo T-shirts/ polo’s (long or short-sleeved), sweatshirts or sweaters
  • Spirit wear (any GVA-DC t-shirt that is NOT a uniform shirt i.e. Fun Run Shirts,
  • Spirit Wear with GVA Dragon logo, etc.) may be worn on Fridays only with approved uniform bottoms!
  • GVA-DC approved uniform bottoms (navy blue, black or khaki)
  • Uniform bottoms must be dress pant material. Denim jeans are unacceptable. Leggings or tights may not be worn unless under a skirt.
  • The uniform shorts, skirts, and skorts must follow the length requirements (finger-tip length)
  • Sneakers are required each day
  • Students and uniforms must be neat and well-groomed

Attire that is NOT permitted
  • Hats/Sunglasses (only for recess)
  • Baggy pants/shorts
  • Ripped/torn clothing
  • Low-cut, midriff shirts/blouses
  • Spaghetti strap shirts/blouses
  • Denim pants
  • Sweatpants
  • Stretch pants/leggings (unless worn under an approved dress/skirt)
  • Open-toed and open-backed shoes
  • Sneakers with wheels

Thank you for your continued patience and understanding during these ever-changing times!!!

Warmly,

Stacy Bush
