GVA Dress Code

Rationale for Uniforms 

GVA-DC is responsible for providing a safe, egalitarian, academically focused environment for students. Research has shown that a school community thrives best when the simple dress code does not distract from the learning surroundings. To accomplish this goal, GVA-DC requires unassuming, inexpensive uniforms. This is not intended to burden any family, and arrangements have been made to assist those families in need. The dress code and how violations will be addressed are as follows: 

Approved uniform attire includes T-shirts, polo shirts (long or short-sleeved), sweatshirts, and sweaters with a GVA-DC logo.

• Tops can be any solid color.
• Any GVA-DC logo is acceptable (including “Spirit Wear”)
• All sweaters, sweatshirts/hoodies, and jackets worn in the building must have a GVA-DC logo.
• Uniform bottoms must be dress pants in Khaki, navy blue, and black.
• Denim jeans are unacceptable.
• Leggings or tights may not be worn unless under a skirt.
• Uniform shorts, skirts, and skorts must follow the length requirements (finger-tip length)

Approved Footwear

• Sneakers are required each day. 

Attire NOT permitted 

• Hats/Sunglasses may be worn at recess but are not permitted inside the building.
• Athletic pants/shorts or sweatpants
• Ripped/torn clothing 
• Low-cut, midriff shirts/blouses
• Spaghetti strap shirts/blouses 
• Denim pants 
• Stretch pants/leggings (unless worn under an approved dress/skirt)
• Open-toed and open-backed shoes 
• Sneakers with wheels 

Dress Code Violations

• If students come to school wearing unacceptable attire, they will be loaned a gently used uniform for the day (if available), and a note will be sent home to parents. 
• If a used uniform is unavailable, parents may be called to bring in a change of clothes. Multiple Dress Code infractions may result in disciplinary action.
