Hello Families of Hamilton English - First Grade,

Spring is here and it is filled with learning opportunities here at GVA. We are challenging ourselves, strengthening friendship skills and are in the flow of learning. The first part of May we will take our End of Year iReady, and Dibels assessments, to see our progress in the First Grade academic standards and to celebrate areas of instructional growth. (Parent reports will come home in our Friday Folders.)

April 29 we start; We Use Goods and Services in our Benchmark curriculum. Please read the Parent Letter for info and ideas to make connections at home.

Spelling 4/29-5/3: Unit 9, Week 1 (gown, clown, down, pout, shout, sprout, mouse, house, before, done)

Spelling 5/6-5/10:Unit 9, Week 2(foil, coil, soil, coin, join, joy, boy, toy, walk, buy)

Spelling for 5/13-5/17: Unit 9, Week 3 (bloom,room,gloom,doom, hood,good,wood,stood, does, another)

Go to Spelling City for Challenge words and Bookclub words.

Students should be bringing home a Friday Folder(green).  This contains a Learning Log which we filled out in class.  In case you want to know what some board examples were, here goes:

  • Week of April 29. Some topics I learned about in class this week were: Spelling -ow, -ou Goods and Services, Main Idea and Details, Plural Possessives, commas,
  • A book I read this week was From the Cow to You, Cushy Cow Bonny, The Breakfast Trade . The Log should be signed by Teacher and Parent.  The pages stay in the Friday Folder for the entire year. Please check your students' work for insight into how they are performing in class.   You will also find a Reading Minutes page which students should keep at home and color in according to the directions on the top. I encourage you to have your student fill in the 100 chart numbers as this is excellent practice for one of the critical math requirements of First grade. When their sheet is full (1000 minutes), your student brings it to school for a dip in my PRIZE BOX! If they filled out numbers they get two dips in the Prize Box!

Important Links:

Hello Families of Hamilton English, I spoke to many of you about the Amplify (Rooster icon) app to help your students excel on the Dibels8 Assessment.  Here is the app to download on your device and then you simply scan the QR code that you received at conferences or that will be coming home in the Green Friday Folder.  Unfortunately, it is only available for apple products.

To enlarge upon the snack topic:  We eat Snack in the classroom which is carpeted.  We also eat at tables shared by other students.  Because of this I have made a few executive decisions.  If children come in with snacks that could create a mess in the carpet or stain the carpet and clothes, those can be enjoyed in the lunchroom but not in the classroom.  Some of these foods are Cheetos, Jello, and smoothies or dark juices.  I also ask children to save high sugar foods like cookies, candy and cake for lunch, or HOME.  Thank you for your help and support keeping our children learning their best and behaving their best by providing healthy foods.  When everyone has nutritious snacks, no one notices or complains. [Sometimes snacks are forgotten; donations of food bars, applesauce, chips, etc. are gladly accepted. Remember to turn in receipt for donation credit. ]

Along the same line, Birthday treats should be age appropriate toys for each child in their class.  We have 22 students in the AM and 23 students in the PM.  Procedure is to recognize birthdays in the PM class.

Scholastic Books are available to order!

Coming home in Friday folders, or by the link in the letter below.  Browse the catalog with your student and order online.  Use the Teacher Code:  YDQBP Our classroom gets free books and materials in proportion to the size of the order. This benefits kids who can't order as well!

First grade Homework is to read for 10-30 minutes every night, and we will send home a Reading Log, so these books are a great, inexpensive way to stock your library. Our class needs some book's on cd, especially Non-fiction. If you would like to donate, be sure and submit the cost to GVA for volunteer credit.

Class Rules and Procedures

Respect - others, things and our school.
Responsible - do what is right even if no one is looking.
Ready to Learn - Listen with our whole body, follow directions the first time, and do our best all the time.
Healthy body, healthy mind - bring healthy snacks and treat others the way we want to be treated.

HOMEWORK First grade students need to read every night for at least 10 minutes.  By Jan. the expectation is 15 minutes and by May, 20 minutes.  As students are gaining skill, parents should read with them.  As they reach independence, students should read independently.
i-Ready:  30 min per week in Reading.
