Shopping for the Book Fair and collecting donors for the Fun Run has started.

I sent home Scholastic book orders for our classes.  This is separate from the one for school.  I am sending this in case you aren't able to come to school.  We hope to send one once a month.  When you buy books our class gets points that I can use to buy new books.  All orders are done online and our class code is on the back of the flyers

This week we learned about the -an family worked on writing correct sentences, learned about doubles plus one in math, and talked briefly about making laws.

Next week we have spirit week with a different dress up day every day.
Monday- a person from history
Tuesday- decade day
Wednesday- Backwards
Thursday- Future Self
Friday- Free Dress

Some of you may be aware that I am teaching virtually and online.  Since both classes are on here from time to time information might need to be broken up.

Virtual Families
- I sent home a yellow folder to help with organization.  Every week you will need to put work needing to be completed on the left.  Students will put their done work on the right.  On Friday this is what will need to be turned in.  I will no longer be putting up on Google Classroom what is due because of this new method.
-Next Friday your completed work for our class only goes into my bag.
-If you are able to donate a yellow folder they are $0.25 right now at Wal Mart.

Schedule ideas

In this crazy time, it has been suggested to create a schedule to help build some normalcy.  I have created one for myself and encourage you to do the same with your kids.  Also, a parent brought to my attention a potential issue of needing to use technology to work from home and students using technology.  First, not all assignments I send will involve technology.   Second, if needed I suggest everyone in the house is involved with determining who will use what type of technology and when.  Remember there is a Raz-kids app which I have heard can be used on phones and probably can be accessed on other devices.

An example schedule:

8 am - 9 am Breakfast/Get ready (Yes. Change out of PJs)

9am - 9:40am Writing

9:40-10:10  Play. Ideally outside if weather permits and availability.

10:10 am - 10:40 am  Reading I will provide specific assignments, but additionally you can use Raz-Kids, leveled books can be bought through eBay, Epic! (I will try to set this up), and books around the house

10:40am - 11:00 am Break. Ideally, run around and play outside. Have a snack.

11:00-11:30 Social Studies/ English concept like bossy r

11:30-12:10 Specials

12:10-1:00 lunch and play

1:00-1:30 Language

1:30-2:00 break, play

2:00-2:30 math

2:30-7:00  play, color, craft, dinner, family time

8:30?         Be in bed

*If your student has language in the morning than stay with that schedule.  So language in the AM and English in the PM.

Remote learning starts Tuesday

Hello Families!

I know one of the big questions is what remote learning will look like starting Tuesday, March 24, 2020. For Monday I would suggest trying to get used to a schedule and different routine.  I will be posting an example schedule.  I am working on putting together things for the kids to work on each day to keep them engaged and to try to maintain some normalcy in some very unusual circumstances. One of the best things we can do for the kiddos is to keep them reading over this extended break from school.

Starting Tuesday, March 24, 2020, I will be sending a daily email every morning by 8 AM with different practice activities for the day, touching on each of our key areas - reading, writing, and social studies. I completely understand different levels of access to technology and the ability to print things at home. I am very flexible in how or to what extent things are completed. My goal is to continue to give the kids the opportunity to practice what we've been learning so they aren't rusty when we are all together back at school.

I will also send the entire sight word list we are working on this year which you can make flash cards from.  I would focus on one set at a time.  The goal in first grade is to be able to spell every word correctly and be able to read the word.  I also have some material on how to teach reading and writing.  If I send an entire packet I’ll let you know what parts to do and when.

Finally, I am also looking into possibly talking online with half of the class at a time using Zoom.  Smaller groups work best because it is easier to see everybody.   I would like to do our community circles time and give the students a chance to see each other and talk.  Please email if you are interested in having your students participate.  If you are sharing the computer with your child let me know if there is a time of day that works best and I will try to accommodate.

If you have any questions or concerns about anything, please never hesitate to reach out! I will do my best to support you and your family however I can. I am here for you and your kids (with respectful social distance 😉). Thank you for helping take care of our community, your kids, and yourselves through this difficult time.

Thanks,

Ms. Folkestad

Parent Teacher Conferences

Dear Families,

Spring conferences this year are open to anyone; however, they are optional. I will be reaching out via email if I feel like a conference is definitely needed. You may sign up for one if you choose, but if you do not hear directly from me, I do not have any academic or behavior concerns to discuss with you, nor do we have any current grade-level assessments to review. :-) If we have recently met (within the last month) one on one or in a formal meeting with other GVA staff members, I will not be requesting an additional meeting. If you feel you need a conference but would prefer it to be via email, please reach out and let me know. :-)

Please note that all sign-ups need to be made no later than 4:00 pm on Wednesday, March 11. Also, drop-in conferences are not advised, as I will be in and out of my room in meetings and working on school tasks/projects when not meeting with parents who have previously scheduled a conference. Thank you for your understanding and cooperation. :-)

Conferences are 15 minutes long; the 20 minute time indicated includes transition time. :-)

The following can be copy and pasted into the browser to link with SIgnUp Genius.
